The Filipino exchange nurse survived by crawling and hiding under a double decker bed while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was distracted with his other victims.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763381985657\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hours later, Amurao gingerly emerged from her hiding spot and realized her eight housemates were gone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763382002602\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among them were two Filipino nurses, Valentina Pasion and Merlita Gargullo. They and Amurao had only been in the US for several weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763382014925\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gloria Davy, Patricia Matusek, Nina Jo Schmale, Pamela Wilkening, Suzanne Farris, and Mary Ann Jordan also fell victim to Speck that night. All three lived in what would later become the scene of the crime: 2319 East 100<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Street.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763382590351\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amurao, a Far Eastern University alumna and native of San Luis, Batangas, was known for her adaptability and her grace under pressure. These would come in handy on the night of the crime and in the months leading up to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s arrest and conviction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558836008\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Philippines, 23-year-old Pasion had graduated in the top 10 of her class in Manila Central University. A lawyer\u2019s daughter, she earned a reputation among colleagues as a great cook.Before the crime, Pasion had written her parents and promised to send some money to fix their home in Isabela.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558849279\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The daughter of a doctor in Mindoro, 23-year-old Gargullo graduated from Arellano University. Her fellow nurses remembered her beautiful singing voice and the delicious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kabayanremit.com\/blog\/lifestyle\/famous-filipino-food-easter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adobo and pancit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she would cook for them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383363035\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The murder of Pasion, Gargullo, and their roommates shocked the world with its senselessness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383374778\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining why he committed what was dubbed as America\u2019s crime of the century, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> merely said, \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t their night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383386391\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But luck was on one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nurse\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side. While she was there, the community hospital phoned and requested her for a shift the next morning.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383497447\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With work changing her plans, Silverio walked back to Townhouse 2319 to personally back out of the sleepover.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383516932\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She rang the front doorbell. No answer. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383529337\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She tried the back doorbell. Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383553533\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assuming no one was home, Silverio returned to her apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558684501\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/illinois\/supreme-court\/1968\/41042-5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">court records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Amurao would recall hearing a doorbell, going downstairs with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and another housemate to respond, and seeing no one at the door. Silverio had likely gone to the back to ring the second doorbell when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opened the front door. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383587332\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After her first doorbell, Speck ignored the succeeding two rings until Silverio finally went home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383635405\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[She] inadvertently courted death three times and escaped unscathed,\u201d wrote Silverio\u2019s grandniece Ysabel Vitangcol for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/richard-speck-murder-nurses-survivor-corazon-amurao-luisa-silverio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383655235\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Silverio, Mary Ann Jordan was not as lucky. She slept over at Townhouse 2319 that night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383678443\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsure if speaking out would affect her nursing career and her dream of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kabayanremit.com\/blog\/travel\/immigrate-to-the-usa-filipinos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moving to the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Silverio would not share her story with the public for over 50 years.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383693466\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years later, she said the crime and the loss of her friends and colleagues broke her heart too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763383703850\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Silverio said to Vitangcol, \u201cI was traumatised. It was devastating. She opened the door to the sight of Speck brandishing a gun and knife.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386183509\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amurao and her roommate then ran to another friend\u2019s room and hid in a closet. But minutes later, a housemate coaxed them out of hiding, saying Speck would not hurt them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386196437\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He did.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558967372\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight nurses died that night, each picked out by Speck from a single room where he had gathered all his scared victims. Only Amurao survived by inching her way under a double-decker bed, even though Speck had tied her hands and ankles with torn bedsheet strips.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386221486\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She stayed hidden for five hours, witnessing Speck take her friends one by one. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386238676\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 5:30 a.m. the next day, almost three hours after Speck had left the scene, Amurao untied herself and crawled out of her hiding spot.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386254294\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horrified by the sight of her departed friends, Amurao went onto a window ledge and screamed for help.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558665285\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barely a day after witnessing the crime, Amurao spoke to Chicago police for two hours. She provided details for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/idnc.library.illinois.edu\/?a=d&amp;d=TCA19660718-01.1.1&amp;e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN----------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">police sketch of Speck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that made rounds in the media. She also identified Speck from a photo line-up.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386311569\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But among the biggest clues she gave the police was her memory of the \u201cBorn to Raise Hell\u201d tattoo on Speck\u2019s arm. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386328402\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The press ran the story.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386347503\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quickly after, a doctor treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for self-injury spotted the said tattoo and called the police.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386372030\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1966\/07\/20\/archives\/survivor-sees-speck-in-room-at-hospital-nurse-sees-speck-in.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19 July<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Amurao faced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his hospital room and confirmed his identity to the police.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386390297\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than a year later, she stepped down from the witness stand and pointed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out to a judge and jury in Peoria, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 6 April 1967.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763386423024\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>She said, holding her index finger just inches from Speck\u2019s face, &#8220;This is the man.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763554805305\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rblandmark.com\/2017\/07\/11\/william-j-martin-80-prosecuted-richard-speck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late William Martin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2016\/07\/05\/lead-prosecutor-reflects-richard-speck-s-chicago-murders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lead prosecutor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the case against <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speck, said:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1763558607099\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<blockquote><p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost witnesses would say, \u2018He\u2019s the man in the black suit, etc., or point to him from the witness stand. I&#8217;m not that kind of person, because I&#8217;m always a happy person.
