It has two types:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584315670\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clade I \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically the clade Ib strain, is what is being reported in cases from Central and East Africa and the reason for the WHO\u2019s PHEIC declaration in August 2024. According to the CDC, records suggest that this clade is more severe than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clade II.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clade II \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This, specifically clade IIb, was the cause of the WHO\u2019s PHEIC declaration in 2022. Reported cases of this type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually come from West Africa, but the 2022 PHEIC recorded cases around the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 22px;text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading\" >A brief history of mpox<\/h4>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584339775\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may seem like a new disease, scientists have records of this illness dating back to the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584351503\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was first recorded in a Danish lab in 1958, when scientists observed poxes on research monkeys. What caused these poxes remains undetermined.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584363908\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twelve years later, the DRC recorded the first case of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a human; and in the decades that followed, doctors continued recording <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases from Central, West, and East Africa. Since 2005, the DRC has reported thousands of cases.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584377872\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reaching a different continent came in 2003, when the U.S. reported an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outbreak. According to the WHO, these cases were \u201clinked to imported wild animals.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584399573\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recent news reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Nigeria in 2017, followed by the PHEIC in 2022. This type of transmission includes sexual contact, breathing, talking, hugging, or kissing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fomite transmission \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person touches something that has been exposed to someone with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mpox<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Animal-to-person transmission \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person handles or is wounded by a live animal carrying the virus. More than 99.9% of people survive,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584628505\" >\n\t\t<div is still important to take precautions against the disease\u2014especially if you are among what the CDC identified as high-risk patients:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a history of eczema<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant people and their foetuses or newborns<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1726584653137\" >\n\t\t<div
