Without his efforts, there would be no <a href=\"https:\/\/kabayanremit.com\/blog\/news\/the-delano-grape-strike\/\">Delano Grape Strike<\/a>, and no retirement home for the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.abs-cbn.com\/ancx\/culture\/movies\/10\/14\/20\/the-untold-story-of-the-delano-manongsor-how-pinoys-led-a-farmworker-revolution-in-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manongs<\/a> (older Filipino American men), growing too old for manual labour in America. Money was always hard to come by for the Bulosan&#8217;s; thus, when he turned 17, Bulosan moved to America hoping to make enough money to help his family and fund his education.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658220577256\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>When he landed in Seattle, he was not fluent in English and only had three years of formal education. Just like Larry Itliong and the manongs, Bulosan worked several odd jobs in hotels, farms, and Alaskan canneries just to make ends meet. Working these jobs, he endured poverty, racism, and horrible living conditions. He even contracted tuberculosis, which cost him most of his right ribs and the use of one lung.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658310603182\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Recovering in the hospital after three surgeries, Bulosan read voraciously and became a self-taught writer. Excerpts of his work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/the-laughter-of-my-father-carlos-bulosan\/1109761113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Laughter of My Father<\/a> even appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/1942\/12\/19\/the-laughter-of-my-father#:~:text=Tells%20about%20a%20wedding%20in,scandal%20drove%20him%20to%20America.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Yorker<\/a> and Harper\u2019s Bazaar. \u00a0He also wrote an essay called \u201cThe Freedom from Want,\u201d which appeared in the Saturday Evening Post alongside a photo of Norman Rockwell\u2019s painting of the same name.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658307360177\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>However, Bulosan would be most known for his novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/600643\/america-is-in-the-heart-by-carlos-bulosan-foreword-by-elaine-castillo-introduction-by-e-san-juan-jr-selected-by-jeffrey-arellano-cabusao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America is in the Heart<\/a>, a semi-autobiographical story depicting the immigrant worker\u2019s experience in the 1930s to 1950s America.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658307477125\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Sadly, Bulosan lived a short and difficult life. Just as his star was growing, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/America-was-in-the-heart-but-the-FBI-was-in-his-2787601.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blacklisted<\/a> by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1950, for possible links to the Communist Party. This was a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=N35IugBYH04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McCarthyism<\/a> was rampant in America, and Bulosan along with other public figures like John Lennon, Edgar Hoover, and Martin Luther King, Jr. were also under <a href=\"https:\/\/welgadigitalarchive.omeka.net\/items\/show\/539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI surveillance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658307535772\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Blacklisted, Bulosan could no longer find a stable job. He fell into alcoholism and poverty before his death from severe bronchopneumonia in 1956. The FBI never found evidence to link him to communism.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658481525328\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Today, Bulosan is honoured as a voice of the immigrant experience in America. Vicki Manalo Draves was one of these women, being the <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/news\/vicki-draves-diving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first woman to win two Olympic diving gold medals<\/a> in one year.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658310786837\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Born <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnation.inquirer.net\/129594\/the-olympic-triumph-of-vicki-manalo-draves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victoria Manalo<\/a> to a Filipino father and a British mother, Draves did not learn to swim until she was 10 years old. She also had to deal with discrimination in her earlier days.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658480236027\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Aware of her Filipino name, Draves\u2019 old coach made a separate swimming club just for her. He even required her to use her mother\u2019s maiden name, Taylor, before she could compete.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658309425559\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>It was only when she trained with Lyle Drave that she reclaimed her Filipino name. Draves went on to marry her coach, and together they won five U.S. swimming championships and a gold medal each for springboard and platform diving in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uVdk6-fXOlI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1948 Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658224025021\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Draves went on to become a professional swimmer before going on to run a swimming and diving program with her husband, Lyle.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658224122491\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>In 2005, San Francisco named a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.somapilipinas.org\/cultural-assets-1\/2018\/7\/25\/victoria-manalo-draves-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">park at South of Market (SOMO)<\/a> after her. Then, she moved to America to earn a degree in zoology from Mount St. Mary\u2019s University in Los Angeles, California. She then went on to earn a graduate degree from the University of Nevada, where she met her husband, Jon.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658224740548\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Buchholdt and her family moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1965. Together, they led the Delano Grape Strike in 1965, for better wages and living conditions for grape farmers. In the process, they united with Mexican farmers and formed the United Farm Workers Union (UFW), with Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and fellow Filipino <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.advancingjustice-la.org\/sites\/default\/files\/ESUSHELAPVC%20Speech_by_Andy_Imutan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Imutan<\/a>. The UFW eventually won the strike in 1970.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658309545644\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Born in Ilocos Sur in 1904, Vera Cruz moved to America in his early 20s to help his family and earn a university degree. Like Bulosan and Larry Itliong, Vera Cruz was forced to take up seasonal jobs in farms, restaurants, and canneries to make ends meet. He was able to study in Gonzaga University for a year, but eventually dropped out because he could no longer afford the tuition.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658480713969\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>Vera Cruz became a labour organiser later in life, joining his first strike in 1948 for better wages for asparagus farmers in Byron, California. In the 1950s he led the Delano Chapter of the National Farm Labour Union, before joining the Agricultural Workers Organising Committee (AWOC). The AWOC would go on to start the Delano Grape Strike in 1965, before uniting with Cesar Chavez\u2019s group to form the UFW.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658480840746\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>As a founding member of the UFW, Vera Cruz toured the U.S. to gather support for the Grape Strike. He also recruited new UFW members. In 2022, the Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/05\/19\/politics\/us-navy-destroyer-filipino-medal-of-honor-recipient-intl-hnk-ml\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> it would be naming a warship after him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658309069606\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmohs.org\/news-events\/medal-of-honor-recipient-profile\/get-to-know-jose-calugas-this-filipino-american-history-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jose Calugas<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Calugas was a Philippine Scout working as a mess cook when Japanese soldiers fired at his unit in Bataan in 1942. Twelve hours into the attack, he led a 1,000-yard dash to an available gun and opened fire at enemy forces at the risk of being killed. He received his Medal in 1945 after surviving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Bataan-Death-March\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bataan Death March<\/a> and Japanese labour camps, and after becoming a guerrilla fighter and spy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1658309683861\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmohs.org\/recipients\/rudolph-b-davila\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rudolph Bianco Davila<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 In 1944, Germans spotted Davila and his men on an Italian hillside and opened fire. Though everyone retreated, Davila chose to crawl to the nearest machine gun and fight back. He then ordered another gunner to take his place, before crawling to another point to signal instructions. His courage eventually led him to take out five enemy soldiers and extinguish two German machine guns.
