Proof of address – Which documents are acceptable?
There are different reasons as to why you might need proof of address. Whether you need to open a bank account, check your credit score or send money overseas, banks or other financial institutions may request for a document that proves your identity and where you live.
Proof of address allows financial institutions, as well as the government, to verify an individual’s identity to prevent fraudulent activities.
Though providing proof of address may be a bit more difficult if you’re new in a country, it shouldn’t be a problem if you’ve been residing in the country for quite some time. It’s quite likely that you already have at least one of the acceptable documents.
What can I use as proof of address?
Depending on what you need the proof of address for, there are different types of documents accepted by financial institutions. Here are the most commonly accepted proof of address documents in the UK:
- Latest bank or credit union statement
- Most recent credit card statement
- Utility bills
- Valid UK driving license
- Council tax statement
- Tenancy agreement of current residence
- Mortgage statement of current address
- Recent proof of state entitlement or local authority-funded benefit (e.g. housing benefit, state pension, grants, council tax benefit etc.)
- HMRC-issued tax information
Before sending any copy to the organisation requesting for it, make sure to check with them first. Some organisations may accept documents that others don’t.
